Hasim Rahman: "Someone needs to point Klitschko in the direction of the yellow brick road!"

7 Nov 2005 15:20       hits 12947

GL: April 30, June 18, July 23, November 12 and now who knows? How do you feel about the fourth postponement of this fight? "As I told you, I knew Colonel Sanders was going to quit before ten rounds. I just thought he make it to the ring before he decided to bow out. I think it has to be obvious to all of the Klitschko fans that their guy doesn't want to fight me. I'm the most dangerous guy out there for him to fight and he knows he's not ready for me after a year off, so I know he's not going to be ready after a year and a half. I'm ready for Mr. Klitschko and I went through the whole interim title process because I knew that was the only way I'm going to become the WBC heavyweight champion. I knew I would be WBC champ one or the other, I just thought he'd show up this time. I think it's become painfully obvious that this man doesn't want to fight me."

GL: With DKP and yourself already lobbying to become "undisputed" WBC champion, you may never get to fight Klitschko. Is that disappointing?

Hasim Rahman: "Well, there's two Klitschko's so maybe I could get in there with his brother and dispose of him. And after he sees what I do to his brother, maybe he'll get up enough courage to get into the ring with me. I told you if he stubbed his toe or hurt his finger he wouldn't show up to fight. I''m in my last day of training camp and I've been looking strong and sharp, feeling focused and then I get the news that this man is pulling out of the fight. When I first heard it, it was shocking. But at the same time it was something that I couldn't put by him. This man travels all over the world and someone just needs to point him in the direction of the yellow brick road so he can get a heart and get in the ring and fight."

GL: Over the weekend Bob Arum told me that Tony Daly said Klitschko would be able to fight if he wore a brace most football players wore. The next call I got was from Shelly Finkel telling me Klitschko wouldn't be able to fight. Do you think Klitschko's injury is authentic?

HR: "I'm not saying he couldn't have done something to himself, but I defintiely don't think it could have prevented him from fighting. If the doctor says you could fight, you fight. I wouldn't have been able to get away with this. This must be a Klitschko trick. I don't feel it was anything he couldn't have fought with. I get in there and fight injured all the time, most fighters I know do the same. He should just get into politics if he doesn't want to fight."

GL: There were rumblings that he wasn't doing too well and was getting dropped in sparring. Do you believe that to be true and do you believe it had something to do with him not moving forward with this fight?

HR: "Definitely. I don't know what you heard, but I heard he got knocked out in the gym. You can't get concussions when you're getting in the ring with one of the best punchers at heavyweight. When those big gloves and head gear come off it's a whole new ball game and I can't imagine anyone ever knocking me out in the gym. That's crazy. He's supposed to be the man at heavyweight and he's getting stopped in the gym? He's blatantly ducking me and that's obvious. As soon as I signed to fight Monte Barrett, he suddenly declares himself ready to fight. I'm sure if I moved on to fight someone else, he'd suddenly be ready again. The people need to realize, it is what it is and this man is a coward."

GL: Do you think this series of injuries has something to do with his admitted steroid use?

HR: "I've heard that you could be injury prone and things like that but I've never seen him take steroids, I know he's admitted he did, but I don't want to taint what he's done with that because it doesn't matter to me. Steroids or not, I was going to knock him out."

GL: The Rock was hiding under a rock staying quiet during this training camp. Why was that?

HR: "Because all he was saying was that I was the heavyweight champion of talking and I just want to stay quiet and show the world that Vitali Klitschko cannot beat me. I've seen him fight, I've seen him show some courage and I've seen him show some quit. I was training to make him quit. I boldy predicted that he wouldn't go ten rounds, but the man quit before he even got in the ring. I'm calling him Colonel Sanders from now on. He's deceiving the boxing world and calling himself a champion when I've been acting like more of a champion that he has. I've made his mandatories and I've backed him into a corner only for him to run away again."

GL: You and Don King recently settled your differnces. If you're to be named the "undisputed" WBC champion, will you demand unification?

HR: "Yes."

GL: "Whom among the other champions would you prefer to unify with?

HR: "Put their names and James Toney's name in a hat and whichever one comes up first would get it first. The four people who should be in the box-off for the heavyweight championship are James Toney, Chris Byrd, Lamon Brewster and myself. I just hope people realize that Klitschko doesn't want to fight me. And I can't blame him after he's getting knocked out by eight round fighters in the gym."

GL: Eight round fighters like who?

HR: "I heard Travis Walker knocked him out and I'll have to get back to you with the other name. These guys might be good prospects or whatever, but they shouldn't be knocking out the heavyweight champion of the world in the gym."

Povetkin finishes Rahman; keeps belt

As many suspected would be the case from the moment the fight was made, former heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman had nothing to offer whatsoever in a brutal mismatch against second-tier titlist Alexander Povetkin on Saturday at the Sporthalle in Hamburg, Germany. Povetkin, making the third defense of his belt, is not to blame for the farcical fight, in which he crushed Rahman in two one-sided rounds read more ...

Alexander Povetkin Destroys Hasim Rahman in Two

Alexander Povetkin (25-0, 17KOs) stopped former two-time beltholder and mandatory challenger Hasim Rahman (50-8-2, 41KOs) in two rounds of action to retain the WBA «regular» heavyweight championship. After a slow first round, Povetkin let his hands go in the second round and gave Rahman a beating. As expected, Rahman was quickly wobbled and took a beating against the ropes as Povetkin continued to let his hands do and unleashed punishment read more ...

Atlas predicts Povetkin KO of Rahman

Boxing can be the theater of the unexpected, sport’s finest purveyor of The Upset, that shocker of a spectacle when one man takes the script, tears it in half, douses it with lighter fluid and torches it, to the amazement and delight of his audience. On Saturday in Hamburg, I do not expect Hasim Rahman, the 39-year-old former heavyweight titlist, to offer boxing fans another installment of stellar drama. Yes, he has done it before read more ...

Povetkin, Rahman Go Face To Face at Presser

Two very different attitudes on display in Hamburg, Germany. While Alexander Povetkin, WBA Heavyweight-World-Champion, was happy to talk to the press and presented himself in a positive manner, his mandatory Hasim Rahman drew attention by being quite moody at their first press conference leading up to their fight on September 29 in Hamburg. Maybe the reason for the behaviour of the former world champion was the long and exhausting journey from the Staates. According to himself read more ...

Rahman Injures Hand, Withdraws From Povetkin Fight

The World Boxing Association has confirmed to BoxingScene.com that Hasim Rahman suffered a hand injury that forced him to withdraw from a scheduled fight with «regular» heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin. The mandatory fight was scheduled for July 14 in Hamburg, Germany. Because Rahman is the mandatory challenger, the WBA’s championship committee will evaluate the situation and make a statement later in the day regarding the case. Povetkin is unbeaten in 24 battles, with 16 knockouts, while the interim-beltholder, Rahman, has 50 wins, with 41 knockouts, seven defeats and two draws read more ...

BoxingScene.com has been advised that a deal is very close for heavyweight prospect Tyson Fury (14-0, 10KOs) to face former WBC champion Hasim Rahman (49-7, 40KOs) on the Amir Khan-Paul McCloskey undercard on April 16, which takes place at the MEN Arena in Manchester.
