The World Boxing Council selected James Toney and Oleg Maskaev on Friday as official challengers to interim heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman, who was given the title after Vitali Klitschko retired due to injuries. The heavyweight division had its last obligatory challenge on June 21, 2003, between Lennox Lewis and Klitschko. Klitschko got the title after beating Corrie Sanders on April 24, 2004.

The WBC has now received sufficient votes from its Board of Governors to declare Hasim Rahman the undisputed WBC heavyweight champion of the world. The WBC will make it effective when all the votes are received and prepare an official ceremony to present Hasim Rahman as the champion. Hasim "The Rock" Rahman, 40-5-1 (33), is just weeks away from his significant showdown with heavyweight Monte "Two Gunzs" Barrett, 31-3, (17), but all of the talk surrounding Rahman has to do with his on again, off again, world title challenge against Vitali Klitschko. It has been reported that the winner of the Rahman/Barrett clash will challenge Klitschko for the title on September 24th, allowing just six weeks in between bouts to prepare. The WBC Board of Governors has rejected a request for an exception by WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko and voted to force Vitali to face the winner of the August 13 Hasim Rahman vs Monte Barrett clash unless a step-aside agreement can be reached. It was announced earlier this week that Klitschko had an agreement in principle to face Calvin Brock on HBO September 24.
