Krakow, Poland’s own WBC International heavyweight title holder, the undefeated Mariusz Wach (26-0, 14 KOs) successfully defended his title and kept his unbeaten record alive and well as he stopped late substitute, Orlando, FL’s Jason Gavern in six rounds on Saturday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT. Gavern (21-9-4, 10 KOs), who took the bout on three days notice, was knocked down once in the first and twice in the second round. Wach landed several jabs in round six, which allowed him to then connect with an overhand right, that caused referee Arthur Mercante Jr. to stop the fight at 1:03. The “November Reign” fight card was promoted by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports in association with Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing, and Global Boxing.
New York super middleweight Borngod Washington (3-9, 1 KO) won the third fight of his professional career in what can be considered an upset as he handed the previously undefeated “Slick” Rick Dawson (4-1, 1 KO) the first loss of his professional career. Washington used his weight and power advantage to batter Dawson. Dawson did not fight back for several minutes towards the end of the fight, and since he was unable to defend himself, referee Danny Schiavonne called a halt to the fight at 1:54 of the fourth and final round.
The ten round co-feature pitted two middleweights vying for the NABO and the vacant NABF middleweight title, as Patrick Majewski did battle with Miami, FL’s Jose Miguel Torres in a chess match, which ended with Torres leaving the ring with both the NABO and NABF titles. As the rounds progressed Torres found the right angles and made the right moves to counter and attack Majewski using his jab to follow up with combinations. In round six, Torres landed a solid jab, followed by three hooks to the body and a final left and right hook to the head that sent Majewski to the canvas for the TKO as referee Arthur Mercante Jr. stopped the fight at 1:13 of the round. Torres (23-5, 20 KOs) captured the NABO and NABF middleweight title with the knockout of the previously unbeaten Majewski (17-1, 11 KOs).
Popular polish heavyweight Artur Szpilka (8-0, 6 KO’s) kept his perfect record intact much to the delight of the polish fans in attendance as he stopped the 292 pound David Saulsberry (7-4, 7 KOs) at 1:09 of round two. Szpilka was down in the first and recovered at the count of eight. In round two, Szpilka then sent Saulsberry to the canvas with several good body shots, that kept Saulsberry down on the canvas for the ten count.
Springfield, MA cruiserweight Jose Torres (1-1, 1 KO) won the first fight of his career as he punished and stopped Francwa Russell (0-1) in his pro debut. Russell was unable to defend himself for half of round two and for the entire portion of round three before referee Danny Schiavone had seen enough and stopped the fight at 1:07 of the third.
Undefeated super featherweight Kamil Laszczyk (5-0, 4 KOs) made a quick statement against his opponent Chris Montoya Jr. (2-5, 1 KO) as he knocked him down twice in the first round with the second being his last. Laszczyk scores the TKO victory at just 36 seconds into the first round.
Junior featherweight Nate Green (1-0) made his professional debut a successful one as he won a four round unanimous decision over Josh Crespo (0-1-1). Green won by scores of 40-36 twice and 39-37.
Welterweights Diego Pereira (6-0-1, 2 KOs) and Edwin Soto (7-0-1, 3 KOs) battled for six hard fought rounds. Soto won the early rounds all based off of his jab. Pereira was able to hang in there and be successful at times countering Soto later in the fight. Both fighters at times controlled the fight as each countered played right into Soto’s game plan. In the end, one judge scored the fight 58-56 for Pereira while the others scored the bout 57-57 twice for a majority draw.
Junior welterweight Christian Lao won the third fight of his career by scoring a close majority decision over Antonio Fernandez (0-6). Lao won by scores of 39-37 twice and 38-38 even.
Welterweight Javier Flores picked apart his opponent Bryan Abraham (5-10-2, 5 KOs) over four rounds finally stopping him at 1:02 of the fifth round. Flores (6-0, 6 KOs) used his jab well and landed combinations throughout the fight. Abraham kept up with the speed of Flores, however Flores’ punching power was too much for Abraham. After a flurry from Flores in the fifth round, referee Danny Schiavone stopped the bout giving Flores the TKO victory.
