In the long awaited SHOWTIME Bantamweight Tournament Final, unbeaten Abner Mares (22-0-1, 13 KOs) laid his claim to being the world’s best 118-pounder by dethroning IBF bantamweight champion Joseph King Kong Agbeko (28-3, 22 KOs) via a controversial twelve round majority decision on Saturday night in the highly acclaimed at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
Mares was erroneously credited with a knockdown by referee Russell Mora in round after Agbeko slipped. Mares was quicker and landed the cleaner shots, and also repeatedly hit Agbeko low without getting a point deduction. Agbeko came on late but went down in the eleventh from a clear low blow which Mora called another knockdown. Scores were 113-113, 115-111, 115-111.
