Jorge "Maromerito" Paez Jr. (27-3, 17KOs) avenged his father, Jorge Paez Sr., by winning a ten round unanimous decision over former champion Jose Luis Castillo (62-11, 53KOs). The welterweight bout took place before a packed gymnasium in Mexicali. Correspondent Jose Luis Moreno reported - "despite the fact that Castillo, 37, was willing, he could not pull the trigger, and got past a heavy assault in the eight round, where only pride held him him get through. Paez, 24, started the fight by using distance and dominated the action. Castillo was able to have minor moments of success but nothing more than that." Castillo's nose was bleeding and his face was badly swollen in the bout.

In 1999, Castillo knocked out Paez Sr. in five rounds. Currently Jose Luis is trained under the tutelage of Julio Yáñez. Jose Luis won two since the knockout loss to Alfonso Gomez last March.

"I'm very happy because of what Castillo did to my father. Jose Luis Castillo is a strong fighter, with lots of experience, but we put together a good strategy and it worked. I wanted to knock him out, but he wouldn't go," Paez said.

"I respect the career of Castillo, but he should retire and make room for new fighters. This year I hope to go for a world title, but at 140 pounds. I agreed to fight with José Luis at welterweight because he was never was going to make 140, only 147, but I'll go down to 140 to search for a title."
