Arum: Filipinos Don’t Support ’No Pay-Per-View’ Donaire.

23 Mar 2011 12:27       hits 5967 Print version

Bantamweight ruler Nonito Donaire's sudden defection to archrival Golden Boy seemed to be taken in stride by Top Rank boss Bob Arum. I made a column out of it a few days ago when, upon reflecting on Donaire declaring himself a free agent and then inking with Team De La Hoya, Arum reflected back on past fighter defections and near defections.

"It's never personal," the 79 year old promoter said. "Sometimes with my staff, they take it personally but not me. It's just part of the boxing business."

Upon arrival at Manny Pacquiao's Baguio training camp, up in the Strawberry Country of the Northern Philippines, though Arum made it personal, directing "raspberries" at both Donaire and his brassy, sassy wife, Rachel.

"I don't think the Filipino people like him," Arum said as recorded on a video interview on Tim Sladeck aka Tim Jaymes operated MP website, puportedly Pacman's "official website."

"And that is largely because of her. She criticizes the way (Manny's wife) Jinkee dresses and she is all tarted up...Jinkee dresses like a lady.. Facts are facts."

In using the term, "tarted up" Arum did not mean Mrs. Donaire wears Tartan plaid outfits or that she enjoys eating Pop Tarts for breakfast. He meant "tart" is the Charlie Sheen "Godesses" sense of of the word.

Arum's rant began with his saying that losing Donaire was no great commercial loss.

"He is not a pay per view fightrer. Filipinos don't support him. When we put him on pay per view, we did no buys. When he fought (Fernando) Montiel, it was all Mexicans (at Mandalay Bay). He has not connected with the Filipinos..."
