Roy Jones: David Haye Copied My Style, I Want His Title!

22 Oct 2010 15:11       hits 8963 Print version

Former four division champion Roy Jones Jr. is still pursuing a fight with WBA heavyweight champion David Haye. Jones, 41-years-old, is not ready to retire just yet. Jones lost a twelve round decision to Bernard Hopkins in April and was stopped by IBO cruiserweight champion Danny Green in the first round of their December fight. He thinks Haye is the perfect final opponent before retiring.

"David Haye has admired me all his career. He copied my style as a matter of fact - or tried to anyway! But he's just the heavyweight champion right now who's not as big as the other guys so it would be the perfect match up for me. It's a good opportunity to walk down the line and become heavyweight champion again - or call it a day and walk out," Jones told SkySports' Ringside show.

"I'm just saying hey, if the people want to see it, it would be my last hurrah. But I will try one more time before I go. Over here they want to see it and if they want to see it and I've got anything to do with it, I'm going to give it to them."

Jones won the WBA heavyweight title seven years ago when he decisioned John Ruiz. He moved back to light heavyweight before making a first defense. Like most experts, he agrees that the Klitschkos are going to be very difficult to beat for anyone in the division.

"The Klitschkos have got better and better over time," he said. "They are very big; not so mobile but they are so powerful and they punch pretty correctly, so it's hard to fight them. But you know who it would take to beat them? You've got to have that Mike Tyson mentality (tapping his temple) - my job is to go in there and get his chin," Jones said.
