In a unification clash for the IBF/WBA featherweight world titles, Yuriorkas Gamboa (19-0, 15 KOs) scored a twelve round unanimous decision over Orlando Salido (34-11-2, 22 KOs) on Saturday night at the Palms Hotel Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The talented Gamboa won most the rounds, but had many difficulties against the experienced and cagey Salido. Salido was credited with a knockdown in round eight, but was staggered in round ten. Gamboa dropped Salido twice in round twelve, but was deducted two points for hitting Salido while he was on the canvas. Scores were 116-109, 114-109, 115-109. Gamboa is now WBA/IBF titleholder.

In a very entertaining WBA eliminator between unbeaten lightweights, Brandon Rios (25-0-1, 17 KOs) broke down Anthony Peterson (30-1, 20 KOs), eventually getting a seventh round victory by way of disqualification. Peterson dominated round one, but Rios’ pressure started paying dividends in round two and the bout became a thrilling firefight. Rios staggered Peterson in a big round four. Peterson was dropped hard with a left hand at the end of round five. Peterson was deducted two points for low blows in round six. Peterson was DQ’d by referee Russell Mora for another low blow in round seven at the bell ending round seven. All three judges had Rios up 68-62 at the time the bout was stopped.

Diego Magdaleno (16-0, 4 KOs) bullied, battered and beat up Carlos Oliveira (25-2, 19 KOs) for five rounds before referee Kenny Bayless rescued the Brazilian from a further beating and gave Magdaleno a resounding 5th round TKO victory. Magdaleno pulverized Oliveira with a thunderous right hook that dropped him in the 2nd and kept turning up the heat until Oliveira could take no more and Bayless halted the fight.

Notre Dame boxing champion Mike Lee (2-0, 1 KO) defeated Alex Rivera (2-3, 2 KOs) via second round TKO at 2:59 in a light heavyweight bout. Lee dropped Rivera right as the bell sounded with a left hook to the body. Referee Tony Weeks immediately noticed that Rivera was hurt badly and stopped the contest.

Freddie Roach-trained lightweight Jose Benevidez, Jr. ran his record to 8-0 with 8 knockouts after a second round TKO victory over Manuel Del Cid (4-3, 1 KO). There were no knockdowns but Benevidez was using the unwilling to engage Del Cid as a punching bag early and referee Kenny Bayless halted the bout at :41 in round two.

Unbeaten Olympian middleweight Matt Kovobov (12-0, 8 KOs) remained undefeated as he earned a unanimous decision victory over Anthony Greenidge (14-4-1, 5 KOs). Scores were 79-73 across the board.
