IBO President Ed Levine has commented on the controversial 29 second fight between IBO cruiserweight champion Danny Green and comebacking Paul Briggs, who was rated #45 by the IBO at light heavyweight. “I intend to formally request that the Western Australia Commission conduct a complete inquiry and investigation into the outcome of the fight,” Levine told Fightnews.com.
Is there any approval process or requirements to challenge for an IBO title? If so, what is the criteria?
The requirements to challenge for the IBO title are:
A.) against any opponent from the IBO list of (35) highest ranked opponents, or,
B.) against any opponent between numbers 36-50 provided they meet all of the following criteria:
a. the challenger must not have lost his last fight.
b. the challenger must not have lost any two of his last four fights by knockout.
c. the challenger must have a positive record in his last six fights
When Briggs was rejected as an opponent by the New South Wales Sports Combat Authority, did the IBO consider withdrawing its sanction?
The IBO would not sanction any fight without approval of a recognized boxing commission. While the NSW commission did not sanction the fight, the WA commission did so indicating all criteria for sanctioning was met.
Will there be an IBO investigation into allegations of a fix in the fight?
It would be premature to address this at this time. In any event, if there are factual allegations they must be directed to the regulatory body in charge of the fight, the WA boxing commission.
I intend to formally request that the WA Commission conduct a complete inquiry and investigation into the outcome of the fight.
