Golovkin vs Nunez; Zbik-Gevor Off; Levin Faces Daniels

14 Jun 2010 08:00       hits 4394 Print version

Middleweights Gennadyi Golovkin, WBA # 2, and Milton Nunez, WBA # 15, will clash for the WBA title sometime in July or August in Mexico or USA. Behind this is a long story beginning when Golovkin was named mandatory challenger for Felix Sturm, who - strangely, inactive as he is - became superchamp. Golovkin was then to face Anthony Mundine, who withdrew after purse bids had been held. Gennadi then got Frenchman Hassan N´Dam J´kam as co-challenger but negotiations fell through - and in comes Nunez. If Golovkin is a free agent or still tied to Universum is also an open question.

Universum have announced that Sebastian Zbik vs Khoren Gevor is off for the time being, well, fact is it was never really on as Zbik - according to a press relase from Universum - never signed the contract for the fight, which was announced as on for the show in Schwerin July 17. Replacing Zbik vs Gevor is female fly champ Susi Kentikian and WBO light heavyweight king Juergen Braehmer. The biggest loser is Gevor who first won a legal battle against Universum, was mandatory challenger for the EBU title (and was in March even set to fight then champ Matthew Macklin but withdrew). Gevor then struck a deal with Universum and returned - but will now have to wait further.

Audley Harrison have relinquished the EBU heavyweight title to concentrate on a possible (?) clash with WBA champ David Haye. Harrison hase however gone from champ to mandatory challenger status in the EBU - something that´s probably a first in the history of the EBU. Co-challenger is still Alexander Dimitrenko.

Heavyweights Attila Levin and Robert Daniels could be fighting for the vacant WBFoundation title July 24 in Kampala, Uganda. This show was originally set for January 20 and was to have featured Evander Holyfield vs then WBFederation champ Francois Botha but have since been postponed a number of time. In the co-headliner Minnesota heavyweight Joey Abell might still take on Al Cole.

Danish veteran Christian Bladt takes on EBA welterweight champ Viktor Plotnikov June 26 in Kiev in a co-headliner to Alexander Ustinov vs Paolo Vidoz, a defence of Ustinov´s EBA heavyweight title.
