In a big “Super Six” round two match, Mikkel Kessler (43-2, 32 KOs) dethroned previously unbeaten WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (26-1, 20 KOs) by unanimous decision on Saturday night at the MCH Arena in Herning, Denmark. The fight was very close and fought at a very high level. Both fighters had their moments landing big shots and neither was able to get the upper hand for long. Some huge exchanges in the last round and going to the scorecards the fight seemed still in doubt. Scores were 117-111, 115-113, 116-112, all for Kessler.
The win begins Kessler’s third reign as world champion in the super middleweight division. It is the second time he has held the WBC belt.
The Super Six tourney has really tightened up now. Arthur Abraham still leads with three points. There is a log jam with two points with Froch, Kessler, Andre Ward and Andre Dirrell all one point behind Abraham. Jermain Taylor-replacement Allan Green has no points. Ward and Green meet in the final round two match scheduled for June 19 in Oakland.
Looking ahead, round three matchups are:
Abraham vs. Froch
Ward vs. Dirrell
Kessler vs. Green
