European super bantamweight champion Rendall Munroe (21-1, 9 KOs) accomplished a successful move onto the world scene with a spirited come-from-behind kayo of Mexican guest Victor Terrazas (now 25-2-1, 13 KOs) in an official WBC final eliminator on Friday night at the Skydome in Coventry, England. Munroe (ranked WBC #1, WBA #3 and IBF #7) felt himself uncomfortable from the beginning of the fight. On the other hand, WBC #3 and WBA #4 Mexican has been gradually taking the control of the fight. Terrazas was just a bit more active in the first couple of rounds by boxing from distance and peppering British southpaw with his sharp jab. Round three was in Terrazas’ favour even more do comfortably and he continued to trouble Munroe in the fourth despite a huge blow behind the back of his head late in the stanza. The pattern turned around drastically in the fifth, when seemingly awaken Munroe started to bring war to his Mexican opponent. As soon as the fight went into close quarters, it was all Munroe who dominated his foe in impressive fashion. In the sixth stanza, Terrazas was forced to check up the ropes with his back all round long. Munroe was relentless with his fierce left hooks and right uppercuts. The Mexican tried to come back to boxing’s basics in the sevent but he was outfought by the Brit again. Round eight resembled the sixth round and was fought mostly at the ropes. It looked like inexperienced Mecixan had just nothing left in his tank. This thought proved to be the case in the ninth and (not suddenly) the last round of the fight. Munroe once again trapped Victor at the ropes and unleashed another series, culminating in the left hook over the liver to the midsection of the right side of Mexican’s body. Down he went and was unable to beat the count of ten issued by referee John Keane. Time was 0:57. Next for Munroe will be a showdown against WBC champion Toshiaki Nishioka of Japan.
Unbeaten super middleweight Tony Jeffries (6-0, 4 KOs) struggled with light-punching journeyman Nathan King (12-16, 1 KOs). Score was 59-56 in a six-rounder.
In a rematch, jr middleweight Martin Concepcion (17-7, 10 KOs) won a ten round decision over Kevin Hammond (8-3-1, 4 KOs). Hammond dropped Concepcion in round three, but Concepcion did enough to win 96-94.
