WBC jr middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (45-2-2, 23 KOs) moved up in weight to dethrone WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (36-2, 32 KOs) by twelve round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Martinez was sharp and quick, cutting Pavlik over the left eye and outboxing Pavlik over the first four rounds. Pavlik began to connect with right hands in round five and his power advantage began to tell. Pavlik won the middle rounds scoring a flash knockdown against an off balance Martinez in round seven. Martinez turned the fight around in round nine, busting up Pavlik’s right eye and dominated rounds ten and eleven. Pavlik’s face was a bloody mess when the bout ended. Scores were 115-111, 116-111, 115-112. There was a rematch clause in the contract so expect to see Martinez-Pavlik II coming soon.
