Banks continues his rise

21 Mar 2010 00:05       hits 4414 Print version

Former cruiserweight title challenger Johnathon Banks (now 24-1, with 17 KOs) continued his rise in heavyweight ranks with a sixth-round kayo of fellow American Travis Walker (34-4-1, 28 KOs). Walker chose to be an aggressor from the start, slowly chasing elusive Banks and trying to pepper him with his left jab. IBF #15 Banks, on the other hand, did little in return. In round two, however, the ex-cruiser gave Walker a taste of his powerful right hand but “The Freight Train” took it just fine to continue his measured assault. Rounds three and four were pretty cautious with neither man taking an advantage, while the local crowd started booing both fighters. Round five was a bit more active in favor of Banks but Walker showed no signs of fatigue. The abrupt end of action came in the midst of the sixth, when Banks fired a wicked hook that landed flush on Walker’s chin. Funny though Banks slipped while throwing this bomb and went down first; then in a couple of seconds Walker went down face-first as well. Referee Daniel Van de Viele correctly ruled the initial fall as a slip and Walker’s hard landing as a legit knockdown. Travis was up at the count of seven but was too wobbly to continue and the referee waved the battle off at 1:51 of the stanza. Travis Walker once again showed signs of a glass chin while Johnathon Banks is now wearing previously vacant NABF heavyweight belt.
