Erik Morales: "I Want To Fight, Boxing is My Life"

29 Jan 2010 17:07       hits 5669 Print version

Former three division champion Erik Morales (48-6, 34KOs) has spoken out about his comeback on March 27 against Jose Alfaro (23-5, 20KOs) in Mexico. There might be an international WBC title at stake and the fight takes place at a contract weight of 142-pounds. The boxing public has had a mixed reaction since I broke the news on Morales' return a few weeks ago. Some are happy to see him return. Most want the 33-year-old fighter to stay retired.

Morales wants to accomplish the one goal that got away - becoming the first Mexican fighter to win four titles in four weight divisions. An accomplishment that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and other Mexican fighters were never able to achieve.

"I've defined what I want to do in boxing. I want to fight, and not because I have to, but because I really want to do it. Boxing is my life and has been my life. I'm very happy and I want to campaign in Mexico," Morales told The Record.

Morales was walking around very heavy during his long layoff. He last fought in 2007. Morales has been working very hard in the gym to shed off the weight and plans to start sparring near the middle of February.

"I've been working hard, but I took a break that I felt necessary. I've always fought with the best fighters and because of that, at the end, my body was very tired, but I've have recovered since then," Morales said. "I am very determined. I'm returning with my sponsor Box Latino. The press will see how hard I've worked. I have been working for the last few months."
