Steward Talks Klitschko vs. Chambers, Haye vs. Ruiz

20 Jan 2010 14:29       hits 12138 Print version

In the next week or so, trainer Emanuel Steward will start camp with WBO/IBF/IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko for the March 20 title defense against Eddie Chambers. Steward doesn't usually need a very long Klitschko. He tells BoxingScene.com "Wladimir trains all the time and keeps himself in shape. We will probably start in another week."

Chambers became the WBO mandatory after winning a majority decision over previously udefeated Alexander Dimitrenko last July. Chambers has come a long way since the decision loss to Alexander Povtekin two years ago.

Has Chambers become a better fighter since the Povetkin loss?

"Yes," Steward quickly answered.

"In fact he just beat this kid Dimitrenko. A lot of fighters don't learn from their losses. Even Wladimir has three losses. Some people lose and don't learn. Some people make the same mistakes repeatedly but he learned from his."

Anothe future Klitschko opponent is WBA champion David Haye, who makes his mandatory defense against John Ruiz on April 3 in England. Steward is giving Ruiz a decent shot in the fight. A former two-time heavyweight champion, Ruiz has been fighting top competition for the last decade. The only clear loss over the last ten years was against Roy Jones Jr. in 2003. His decision losses to Nikolai Valuev and Ruslan Chagaev could have gone either way.

"Wladimir said it was a mismatch but I told him that I don't agree. Ruiz has looked good in his recent fights and it's not going to be a walkover. I think David is a phenomenal fighter but you don't know what will happen if he gets hit," Steward said.

EDDIE CHAMBERS: "IT IS GOING TO BE A LONG NIGHT FOR HIM"

He would be extremely mistaken to come into this fight unprepared. I do not think he would do that. I don't think he even thinks it will be an easy fight. One thing I have learned from being in his camp is that he is very professional, he takes everything seriously, every fight seriously and he goes into the fight prepared. I think he is going to do the same thing this time...if he is not prepared, it is going to be a long night for him read more ...
