Nagy Aguilera: "I Never Thought Maskaev Had a Chin"

Unknown 23-year-old Nagy Aguilera (15-2, 10 KOs) knew what he needed to do before he even stepped foot in the ring. He shocked a reported 1,300 fans at the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento, California when he blew away former heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev (36-7, 27KOs) in less than two minutes of the first round.

The loss cost Maskaev, 40-years-old, an already planned WBC final eliminator with Ray Austin. Aguilera didn't think Maskaev had a chin and the plan to blitz Maskaev early paid off. After hurting him quick and putting him down, the veteran never recovered as Aguilera finished him off a moment later with another hard knockdown.

"I did everything my corner told me," Aguilera told The Sacramento Bee. "I was younger, faster, quicker. When I started hitting him to the body and he didn't respond, I decided to go up top. I never thought he had a chin."

Maskaev's assistant trainer, Dick Wood, told the paper that Maskaev did not listen to his corner or follow their pre-fight instructions.

"[Maskaev] wasn't listening or responding. He let Nagy throw all the early punches, which dictated the outcome of the fight," Wood said.

Maskaev, who will likely retire after this loss, refused to answer any questions after the fight and left the arena with his family.
