Williams gets by Martinez

In a war, two-division world champion Paul Williams (38-1, 27 KOs) won a twelve round majority decision over WBC interim super middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (44-2-2, 24 KOs) in a non-title middleweight bout on Saturday night at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Both fighters were down in round one. Martinez’ trip to the deck was of the flash variety, while Williams went down hard. Martinez dominated rounds two and three. Williams got back into the fight from round four and won the middle rounds. It was a battle of attrition down the stretch and both fighters were spent at the end of twelve great rounds. Scores were 115-113, 119-110 and 114-114. (The extremely questionable 119-110 score was turned in by ring judge Pierre Benoist.)

Heavyweight contender Chris Arreola (28-1, 27 KOs) scored a fourth round TKO over super game Brian Minto (34-3, 21 KOs). Areola, returning from his loss to Vitali Klitschko, dropped the much smaller Minto twice in round four before referee Ed Cotton stopped the bout at 2:40.

In an important heavyweight crossroads fight, former world title challenger Tony “The Tiger” Thompson (33-2, 20 KOs) scored a ninth round TKO over Chazz Witherspoon (26-1, 18 KOs). The bout was stopped at the 2:13 mark with Witherspoon unable to defend himself.

Former WBO welterweight champion Carlos Quintana (27-2, 21 KOs) scored a third round TKO over former world title challenger Jesse Feliciano (15-8-3, 9 KOs). Quintana recovered from a second round flash knockdown and got a stoppage win in round three due to a cut suffered by Feliciano over his right eye.

Unbeaten super bantamweight Jorge Diaz (11-0, 7 KOs) made quick work of Luis Angel Paneto (5-7-2), scoring a first round KO.

Jr middleweight Jeremiah Wiggins (7-0-1, 3 KOs) outpointed Manuel Guzman (6-9-2) over six rounds, 60-54, 59-55, 58-56.
