Jirov returns with win

Former cruiserweight world champion Vassiliy Jirov (37-3-1, 31 KOs) returned with a second round TKO over late sub Jonathan Williams (7-6-1) on Saturday night at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix, Arizona. Jirov was actually knocked down in round one, but came back to floor Williams three times in round two before the bout was waved off. It was the the 35-year-old Jirov’s first fight in 27 months. Former heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs was also scheduled to appear on the card, but that bout fell through after Briggs suffered a reported training injury. A bout featuring Erick Vega from “The Contender” also fell through when his foe former cruiserweight champion Kelvin Davis failed a pre-fight physical.
