If everything goes well on October 10 at the Theatre in Madison Square Garden, WBO super bantamweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez and WBA "regular" featherweight champ Yuriorkis Gamboa will meet in 2010. The compete in co-feature bouts on the October 10 card to hype their collision next year.
Lopez faces Rogers Mtagwa and Gamboa will face Whyber Garcia. Juanma says the plan is to face Gamboa next June if everything goes well in his next two fights.
"Our plan is to fight on October 10, then January 23, 2010 against Celestino Caballero, and then we have a date for June. At this stage, I would like the big fights, but I am not the one who picks the fights and I don't protest what my promoter Top Rank tells me," Lopez told Primera Hora. "It's not a secret that in 2010 I will be moving up to 126-pounds. Gamboa is in those plans. This is a business and the viable option is a fight with Gamboa."
Gamboa, like Lopez, looks forward to the fight.
"Right now it's really a matter of getting everything together for us next year. The promoters are trying to organize that event. It is a fight that would generate a lot of interest and the one where a champion like Lopez wants to challenge me. It would be a honor to give him the opportunity," Gamboa said.
