A heavy underdog among the press and most industry bigwigs, Gabriel Campillo (19-2, 6 KOs) came to Kazakhstan and retained his WBA light heavyweight title with a twelve round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Beibut Shumenov (8-1, 6 KOs).

Campillo's promoter Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing LLC, spoke with BoxingScene.com after the fight was over.

"I am very proud of Campillo. He is the first champion with Sampson Boxing LLC. My other six champions I share with other promoters. We have a mandatory right now with Vyacheslav Uzelkov but that doesn't mean it will be our next fight. If the right opportunity comes along, we will ask the WBA for an exception," Lewkowicz said.

Uzelkov (23-0, 13KOs), who I believe is promoted by K2 East, was a very good amateur. A trivia fact, Uzelkov lost in the amateurs, as a heavyweight, to David Haye in the 2001 World Championships in Belfast. From the three fights I've seen, Uzelkov is a solid pro. He stopped a then undefeated Campillo in 2007.

Universum claims to have fight options on Campillo but has yet to produce any documentation to back that up.

"I challenge Universum to show me any fight option contract with Campillo's signature. My attorney Pat English requested these documents on July 14 and we never heard or received anything from them," Lewkowicz said.
