Reports out of Spain are that newly crowned WBA light heavyweight champion Gabriel Campillo (18-2, 6 KOs) will make his first defense of his title against unbeaten Beibut Shumenov (8-0, 6 KOs). The bout will take place August 15th in Shumenov’s native country of Kazakhstan. In his last bout this past June, Campillo was a huge betting underdog when he defeated then WBA champion Hugo Garay in Garay’s native Argentina by close majority decision. Those unfamiliar with the fast-tracking Shumenov should know that he is much more advanced than his eight professional bouts suggest. Shumenov has already easily defeated two former world champions in Montell Griffin by uananimous decision and Byron Mitchell by 4th round TKO in his last bout this past May.
