Alexander Krasyuk: «We plan to organize Uzelkov – Campillo rematch in Kyiv»

24 Jun 2009 18:56       hits 6008 Print version

As we have already reported Spaniard Gabriel Campillo (18-2-0, 6 ÊÎs) won WBA World light heavyweight title in his last fight after he scored a sensational victory over Hugo Hernan Garay (32-4-0, 17 ÊÎs) from Argentina. In this respect it is worthwhile noting that undefeated Ukrainian fighter Vyacheslav Uzelkov (20-0-0, 12 ÊÎs) of «K2 East Promotions» promotional company is a mandatory challenger for this belt. And what is even more interesting in September of 2007 Uzelkov and Campillo clashed in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine for vacant WBA Inter-Continental light heavyweight title and Uzelkov KO'd the Spaniard in round 6.

Alexander Krasyuk, General Manager of «K2 East Promotions», gave his comments on the current situation: «Gabriel Campillo received offer from Garay team in a two weeks notice. The Spaniard became a late sub since David Gogiya who was originally scheduled to clash against Campillo rejected the fight. And under such conditions Campillo’s victory over Garay on his rival’s home turf is of great value. I saw that fight and I must say that Campillo was a better fighter in the ring without a shadow of a doubt. He demonstrated excellent shape and incredible fighting spirit.

Frankly speaking I did not expect such outcome of the fight – Hugo Hernan Garay was a strong and experienced champion; at the same time, however, I was not surprised so much by Campillo’s victory. The fact of the matter is that before his fight against Uzelkov we thoroughly studied tapes of Campillo’s fights and we were well aware of the fact that our guy will face a very strong opposition in Campillo. Our anticipations were correct: the Spaniard was in an excellent shape and fist five rounds of the bout passed in a tense and close contest. Uzelkov solved a difficulty in round 6 by one perfect punch which sent Campillo into severe knockout. That loss was the first defeat in Campillo’s career. But now he has a good chance to even the score while Uzelkov in his turn can demonstrate convincingly that his triumph in the first fight was not by sheer luck. Now Uzelkov is a mandatory challenger for WBA World light heavyweight belt. According to WBA rules a champion is obliged to defend his title within four months. Thus Uzelkov – Campillo rematch is a matter settled.

We have already sent our offer concerning rematch in Kyiv to Campillo’s representatives and we are now in the process of negotiations. We plan to conduct in October a huge boxing tournament in Kyiv and one cannot imagine a better main event than Uzelkov – Campillo rematch with a world champion belt at stake. Such fight can become special thrill in the biggest boxing show. There is a big chance that Ukrainian fans will see this fight in Kyiv and that will be the fourth world championship bout in Ukraine (Nuzhnenko – Garcia, Kotelnik – Kimura and Nuzhnenko – Senchenko world title bouts were held in Ukraine too). In the meantime Uzelkov will fight a tune-up match in July taking part in a ten-rounder during boxing tournament to be held in Odessa.

I would like to make a special emphasis on the fact that Campillo lost once only – it was a convincing and undoubted KO in the clash against Uzelkov which I mentioned before. Formally he had one more loss: last autumn in Germany he was defeated by Karo Murat, EBU (European) super middleweight champ who won the fight by MD. However, it was a classic example of a «home decision» when judges gave their nod to a local guy even after the guest fighter looked much better in the ring. That fight was broadcasted live by «Megasport» TV channel and Ukrainian fans could see for their own eyes who was the better fighter. Thus Vyacheslav Uzelkov remains the only fighter who managed to defeat the current champion which makes their new fight even more interesting and most probably their rematch will be a classic thriller full of suspense».
