Dawson vs. Johnson Rematch, Early Negotiations Begin

22 May 2009 11:58       hits 2308 Print version

Sources close to the situation have advised BoxingScene.com that early discussions have taken place for the anticipated rematch between IBF light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson and Glen Johnson, the former champion. From what I was told, the rematch would land in the fall and HBO, due to Dawson's current deal with the network, would televise the event.

Dawson won a very tough twelve round decision over Johnson last April. The fight was more difficult than Dawson, or most people, had ever expected. Johnson had Dawson in a lot of trouble during the memorable tenth round, and there were a lot of people who actually scored the fight for Johnson.

Unless Bernard Hopkins decides to take a chance, or Joe Calzaghe comes out of retiement, a rematch with Johnson is the obvious fight for Chad. The public has demanded a rematch and it appears the involved parties are taking the necessary steps to meet that demand.

Hopkins: They Want Me Out of Boxing, This is One Way

«They want me out of boxing, and this is one way to do it,» said Hopkins. «Chad Dawson came in the ring tonight, and he just wanted to rough me up with dirty tactics. He wanted to get me out of there, and that was the only way he could. He knew he wasn’t in there with a 46-year-old, because I was quicker and faster than him.
