During the last twenty-four hours, I received a quite a few emails regarding the possible finalization of a potential deal for a fight between WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko and undefeated contender Chris Arreola.
To my knowledge, Klitschko is unable to finalize any deals to “defend his title” until he works out the situation with the WBC and “their” mandatory challenger Oleg Maskaev. A few months back, the sanctioning body ordered Vitali to defend the title against Maskaev. Vitali is trying his best to avoid the meaningless fight by seeking some legal intervention by way of arbitration. Klitschko just had his mandatory against Juan Carlos Gomez in March and the WBC is trying to force him to take a second mandatory in a row.
Arreola’s promoter, Dan Goossen, spoke with BoxingScene.com and advised us that nothing is even close to being finalized. Goossen, like everyone else, is waiting for the situation with Maskaev to be resolved.
“There is nothing at the moment due to the pending litigation between Maskaev, the WBC and Vitali. There is nothing to report now. Arreola in our belief, is ready and able to challenge Vitali for the crown but we have to allow this process to complete itself and then we’ll see if we can come to terms. If not, we are in a very good position as it relates to moving forward at a later date,” Goossen said.
