Promoter Frank Warren is very interested in setting up a rematch between heavyweights Martin Rogan and Sam Sexton. Last Friday in Belfast, Rogan overcame a shaky start to nearly stop Sexton in the eight round. Sexton was out on his feet and getting battered, so Martin stood back and thought the referee was going to stop the fight. He was surprised when moments later the fight was stopped after the referee deemed that his eye was too swollen to continue, and that made Sexton the winner. Rogan is now charged to avenge the only loss on his record.
Rogan said that he stopped punching Sexton, who was out on his feet and had no defense, because he thought the fight was being stopped when the ref began to step forward. The reason I didn't hit him was because the ref came in and I thought he was stopping the fight."
"But he only took Sexton's gumshield back to the corner to get it washed. Fair play to Sam, he's a strong fighter and he caught me early on but I recovered well and I had him well in range when the fight was stopped. He didn't stop me though, and I'll be back, bigger and stronger than ever - I want to get back in the gym straight away for the next fight."
Rogan's trainer John Breen revealed to Setanta Sports that promoter Frank Warren is already looking to match the two fighters in a rematch.
"Frank couldn't make it due to a back injury, but his partner Ed Simmons was ringside and he couldn't believe the passion and size of Martin's support," Breen explained. "Martin may have lost his title but has more credibility now than he did before the fight, and the promoters want a rematch in Belfast, it'll happen."
"He's had three wars now - Decemeber, February and Friday, so he'll take abreak to recharge the batteries, but he will definitely be bigger when he returns."
