Following Saturday night’s HBO Boxing After Dark tripleheader at HP Pavilion in San Jose, California, the focus was on the future of Golden Boy Promotions’ victorious fighters, James Kirkland, (25-0, 22 KOs), and Victor Ortiz, (24-1-1, 19 KOs), as well as local hero and main draw Robert Guerrero, (23-1-1, 16 KOs), and his opponent, Indonesian prospect Daud Yordan, (17-0, 12 KOs), whose scheduled ten-round bout was cut short due to an accidental headbutt in the second round. “We had a wonderful show here in San Jose and what can I say about all the fighters,” said Golden Boy’s Oscar de la Hoya at the post-fight press conference. “We’re definitely going to come back [to San Jose] and definitely going to bring back HBO.”

Also in attendance at the post-fight press conference was Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer, who added, “We have the next date locked in for June 27th. I’ll be working next week on the site and we will bring these fighters back. This really is the next generation of fighters, so HBO is very much tied these young kids and will continue with us to help build them and help grow them into tomorrow’s stars.”

Without specifying a particular fighter, Schaefer also indicated one of the Golden Boy-affiliated fighters on Saturday night’s telecast could appear on the pay-per-view undercard of the Ricky Hatton vs. Manny Pacquiao card on May 2, 2009.

“One of them [Kirkland, Ortiz, Guerrero, or Yordan] might be on the undercard of Hatton-Pacquiao on May 2nd so we’ll be discussing that with their respective management teams next week,” said Schaefer.

During their brief turns at the dais, the various fighters thanked their teams and Golden Boy Promotions for the opportunity to appear on the telecast. Most notable was Robert Guerrero, whom the local promotion was centered around and who had taken considerable criticism on the air and by ringside observers for appearing to solicit the referee’s stoppage which resulted in a No Decision for him and Yordan.

“It was disappointing,” explained Guerrero. “I mean, everybody was coming out to watch me fight and I didn’t get to put on a show like I wanted to [but] that’s boxing. I was hitting him with good body shots and was just getting started. We were going to get him in the later rounds but he was coming in with his head a lot, and he got in one time real good. It was accidental, during an exchange, but I take my hat off to him, he came to fight, what can I say? I’ll be back.”

De la Hoya also expressed his disappointment with the No Decision result between Guerrero and Yordan. “Its very unfortunate what happened but we’re obviously going to sit down with his [Guerrero’s] team and figure out the next steps, whether its moving on or doing the rematch, or going on and fighting other fighters.”

While Yordan did not speak about whether or not he wanted a rematch, he did briefly express his desire to drop back down to his more common fighting weight of 126 pounds.

Towards the end of the post-fight press conference, Victor Ortiz summed up the evening’s theme of looking to the future. “It was an honor to be on that card with Robert Guerrero, James Kirkland, and Yordan, you can’t ask for any greater people than that, these are all champions here. You’ll be seeing a lot more of us.”
