Vyacheslav Uzelkov: «My biggest fight is still ahead»

17 Nov 2008 01:13       hits 9333 Print version

«We both, my trainer and I planned that the fight with Lakatos would go the distance because soon I’ll have to clash in a world title fight. We did not know how it would go. Of course, I would not have missed any chance of early stoppage but surely I’ve profited by going the distance», – says Vyacheslav.

«Now Lakatos is in the twilight of his career and fight with Uzelkov was probably his last chance that’s why he pushed himself to the limit. Earlier in his career he fought three world champions but I think that soon Lakatos will have every reason to say that he fought four world champions – Vyacheslav will give him such opportunity», – Uzelkov’s trainer Vadim Lavrinets joins the conversation. «We did not disclose the fact that Vyacheslav suffered several injuries one by one within ten days prior to the fight with Lakatos – he hurt his neck, spine, shoulder and arm. We exerted ourselves trying to heal him up so that he would feel comfortable in the ring», – the trainer sighs.

-- Vyacheslav, did your injuries disturb you in any way during the fight??

-- When I’m fighting I think only about my victory and top-quality of my boxing performance. As far as injuries are concerned… well, let’s see tomorrow.

-- Did you have any difficulties when fighting Lakatos?

-- He managed to show something in early rounds but as the fight progressed he started to surrender gradually and I felt it and it was my time to gear up.

-- Can you say that this fight was the most difficult one in your career?

-- I would say that it was the longest fight but I cannot say that it was the most difficult one. I think that my most difficult fight as well as my biggest fight is still ahead. In any case I had to go the distance in order to test my functionality.

-- How about support from Kyiv boxing fans? Was it sufficient?

-- Yeah… Kyiv fans are always the best. I am always pleased when I hear support from the audience – it means they like my boxing.

-- In a week you’ll know the name of your next opponent – on November 22nd in Germany Hugo Hernan Garay, WBA light heavyweight champ, will clash with challenger Juergen Braehmer.

-- It means that in a week one of them will sign his own death sentence (the audience starts laughing). The most important thing for me is that my next opponent has world title.
