Unbeaten WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto seems unfazed by the recent retirement announcement by Floyd Mayweather Jr. For almost two-years, boxing fans have been calling for a Mayweather-Cotto bout to settle the issue on which of them is the best fighter at 147-pounds. Mayweather was scheduled to fight Oscar De La Hoya in a September rematch, but announced his retirement last Friday.
"[His retirement] doesn't affect anything in the career of Miguel Cotto. The career of Miguel Cotto continues with or without Floyd Mayweather," Cotto told El Nuveo Dia. "I don't know if he plans to return in the future, that's a question that he should answer. I can't speak for him. He's the only one that knows that reasons that made him retire. There are other big names out there in boxing and we are willing to fight them."
Cotto has Antonio Margarito lined up on July 26 in Las Vegas. He's been mentioned as a possible name for De La Hoya's career-ending fight. He's focused on Margarito, but is willing to meet De La Hoya in the future.
"I've never been the kind fighter to pick my own opponents. I let the promoter handle that. Whoever the promoter gives me, we will fight," Cotto said. "We are very focused on the fight with Margarito and then we will speak of other opponents. If it is De La Hoya, they will let us know. This is a business and a person must review and analyze what is better for us and which fight brings more to the table. It all depends on the result of the Margarito fight."
