Unbeaten Sergio Mora (21-0-1, 5 KOs) became the first "Contender" fighter to win a world title, upsetting champion Vernon Forrest (40-3, 29 KOs) via majority decision to claim the WBC super welterweight title. The 37-year-old Forrest showed total distain for the decade-younger Contender star Mora before the fight, but after Forrest dominated early, Mora had more energy and outworked Forrest over the second half of the bout. Scores were 114-114, 115-113 and 116-112 for Mora.
Paul "The Punisher" Williams (34-1, 25 KOs) recaptured the WBO welterweight title with a first round destruction of reigning champion Carlos Quintana (25-2, 19 KOs). Williams dropped Quintana twice, both times after tough flurries capped off by strong left hooks that sent the now former titleholder to the canvas. After the second knockdown, referee Eddie Claudio immediately stopped the fight as it was obvious that Quintana was out on his feet. Time of the stoppage was 2:15 of the opening round. Afterwards Williams called out both Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito as possible next opponents and was elated as he proclaimed that his belt has finally come back home. Quintana had previously handed Williams his first loss four months ago.
