Upon entering the Southside Boxing Gym in Youngstown, Ohio, there is an unfamiliar face sitting ringside.
It's not a face actually, more of a cardboard cutout of Gary Lockett, the #1 ranked WBO middleweight contender.
On the cardboard cutout is the quote that Lockett made during the initial press conference that announced the fight between middleweight champion of the world, Kelly "The Ghost" Pavlik and Locket.
"He has been tagged before and with my power, I've got a great chance of knocking him out."
Its quotes like this that motivate Pavlik to train just as hard, if not harder, for an opponent that no one outside of Wales knows, and maybe even some in Wales don't know.
"It makes me train harder," Pavlik states. If I lose against him (Lockett), they'll say my wins against Taylor were a fluke. Plus he's from the UK. If you look around boxing right now, there are a lot of world champions from the UK."
Pavlik's trainer Jack Loew, who's been with the Champ since he started boxing as a child, couldn't believe what he saw out of Pavlik this training camp.
"He started earlier than usual for this fight. I usually have to tell him to start picking up the pace, but I've actually had to slow him down," Loew explained.
Not only is Pavlik having a great training camp inside the gym, but also outside, where he runs upwards of five miles in getting prepared for the title defense.
"I had just finished timing him and (I) looked at my clock and it said thirty-one minutes. Five miles in thirty-one minutes! I haven't, check that, no one has seen the best of this kid yet," Loew excitedly predicted.
Pavlik doesn't buy into the myth that Lockett is undeserving for a chance at the title.
"He's not the number one contender for nothing," noted Pavlik. I've got a target on my back. I'm getting the best of everyone. That's why I train as hard as I do!"
Loew agrees, but still feels like Pavlik shouldn't have a problem with the Welshman.
"We want to destroy this kid. We've trained for twelve hard rounds, but it shouldn't last that long. We have to make a statement when you fight a guy like this. Just like Miguel Cotto did with Alfonso Gomez, and I mean no disrespect, but he got him out of there and made a statement."
Another familiar name who believes that Pavlik will not have a problem is former lightweight champion Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini.
"He's the perfect opponent for Kelly," declared Mancini. "He jumps straight out, and then stays too far on the outside. You can't be on the outside against Kelly!"
Pavlik doesn't just want to beat Lockett, he wants to beat everyone. And by everyone, he means everyone in succession.
"You hear stories about how hard it is to keep the title once you win it. Not me. I'm going to make it easy," predicted Pavlik.
