WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (32-0, 26 KOs) scored a five round destruction of The Contender's Alphonso Gomez (18-4-2, 8 KOs) on Saturday night at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Cotto staggered Gomez with a body shot at the end of round one and was credited with a knockdown in round two. Cotto dropped Gomez hard at the end of round three and continued to punish him in round four. Cotto was simply toying with the outclassed Gomez in round five, flooring him with a jab. The bout was stopped by the ring doctor after that round.
Welterweight Antonio Margarito (36-5, 26 KOs) scored a sixth round knockout over defending IBF champion Kermit Cintron (29-2, 27 KOs) to begin his second run as a world welterweight champion and set up a showdown with Cotto. As was the case in Margarito's fifth round KO over Cintron in April 2005, "The Tijuana Tornado" was just too strong as he broke down Cintron, finally dropping him for the count with a brutal body shot. Time was 1:57.
