Moments after losing his IBO Heavyweight Title before a crowd of over 14,000, Sultan Ibragimov offered fans an explanation; in broken English, the fighter stated, "Of course my camp was very good but the last three weeks, I had a problem with my left hand and I couldn't work the way I've worked before."
Ibragimov, sporting a small nick under his left eve, continued, "In the fight I felt I had to be stronger, but I was struggling," adding that Klitschko, "was faster." When FightNews asked Ibragimov why not postpone the fight, his manager Boris Grinberg offered, "To [not] postpone the fight... he's a very brave man."
Ibragimov explained, "In the fight I waited for his right hand and his right hand didn't come. I waited the whole fight and his right hand just came in the last two rounds," of a match billed as the first unification match in a decade, that had fans at Madison Square Garden falling asleep, until they started booing.
Ibragimov said he had watched all the tapes of Klitschko's previous fights, but on this night, Klitschko was, "tougher," adding, "I can't box if he doesn't fight, it was more strategic."
As Klitschko arrived to applause, Ibragimov offered, "The match was very, very good... I could not be in a more important fight."
Klitschko took to the microphone, telling his fans, "I was definitely coming to the fight to win the fight as best as possible. It was not easy to get around the style of Sultan because he was very defensive in dealing with us, and the way he was going back and down."
Klitschko continued, "I could throw the right hand, but I felt I'd lose my balance and that's what he was looking for." Klitschko said of Ibragimov, "He's a good fighter and I have to respect him as a champion. I was trying to use my strategy and fight the fight with my left hand, then my right hand to knock him out."
"It wasn't easy," Klitschko recalled, "I learned something by this, but he was trying to do his best, but as I said, because of his defensive style, it was not easy to win the fight."
Klitschko then stated, "I'm ready to fight again as soon as possible," but said he would be watching to see who wins the March 8 WBC title fight between Samuel Peter and Oleg Maskaev."
Klitschko then stated, "This is a great sport and boxing needs an undisputed champion."
Klitschko trainer Emanuel Steward offered, "Muhammad Ali fought a guy named Jimmy Young and he was a very cagey, defensive guy. Ali didn't look good either in that fight, but he won the fight."
Klitschko was then presented with a ring by the International Boxing Organization, Klitschko responded, "Thanks very much... actually it's my first ring ever."
Klitschko then steered the conversation to a charity he's assisting, which with proceeds from the fight and the auctioning of the robe he wore in it, Klitschko will be sending $500,000 to the Laureus Sport For Good Foundation, who are supporting the Betances Boxing Club on St. Ann's Avenue in the South Bronx.
"The fight tonight was a charity event," he stated, "which is going to a project in the Bronx, to build up the school and give the kids dancing classes, martial arts classes and other facilities." Klitschko said of the project, "The kids are off of the street and away from drugs and crime, so thank-you to everyone for supporting us."
Klitschko was then joined by Olympic Gold Medalist, former sprinter Edwin Moses, who is the Chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy and New York Giant David Tyree, who posed for photos with Klitschko and his three championship belts
