Two great fighters in their primes face each other for the third time for the World Boxing Council (WBC) 122-pound title and super bantamweight supremacy in what may be the final chapter in their historic trilogy.
The anticipation has begun as Israel Vazquez (42-4, 31 KOs) and (37-4, 33 KOs) Rafael Marquez face each other for the third straight time on March 1st at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. The fighters met during a press conference last week at the El Paseo Inn Restaurant in downtown Los Angeles, CA to discuss their final confrontation.
Here is what the fighters had to say:
"We fought twice and all boxing fans got their money's worth and this third fight is no exception," said Vazquez " I don't want to give excuses but it was my nose, I couldn't breath during the first fight. I am well prepared and on March 1st you're going to see a warrior in the ring."
"I don't worry about fighting Vazquez at his home town. You only worry when your not well prepared, when you're 100% you could fight anyone" said Marquez "We're not going to overhaul my style, we're just going to tweak it a little bit. Remember, I won the first fight so I know how to beat Vazquez. I'm hungry to become champion once again. Training in Mexico with a high altitude is what is keeping me relaxed and well focused. I predict a tenth round knockout."
"Marquez and I have proven that we're warriors and we don't back down or take a step back. We love to fight we live to fight," stated Vazquez
Strength, courage and skills are the recipe to creating a warrior and both Vazquez and Marquez have proven to have the ingredients. Both fighters have spent nearly 13 rounds in the ring and all 13 have produced the type of all action fighting that keeps fans tuned in and brings new fans to the sport.
"Our styles are the main reason why these fights are so amazing and crowd-pleasing," said Vazquez. "That's why they're so exciting. You can expect the same on March 1st."
Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez I and II produced the most exciting, bloody, slugfest of 2007 and have led to one of the most highly anticipated rubber matches in history.
"The first two clashes were both 'fight of the year' candidates. If the pattern continues this should be one for the ages," said promoter Gary Shaw. "As a promoter I am proud to present this event. As a fan, March 1 cannot come fast enough."
