Calzaghe on Hatton: "I Won't Make His Mistake"

Super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe, speaking with The Evening Standard, promises to stay away from making the same mistake as his UK countryman, Ricky Hatton. Calzaghe said that Hatton allowed Floyd Mayweather Jr. to lose his focus during the pre-fight hype in Las Vegas. Hatton's lack of focus, according to Calzaghe, contributed to the knockout loss to Mayweather last December.

"I was over there for Ricky's fight and even he will admit he let Mayweather's insults get to him," Calzaghe said. "He lost the game-plan a bit. I know that Ricky says as soon as he had a point deducted he lost his cool during the fight, but at the weigh-in you could see he was angry — and you can't be an angry fighter."

Calzaghe will travel to Las Vegas on April 12 to fight light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins, and promises to stay away from Hopkins' bag of mental tricks. The report notes that both boxers will receive a guaranteed $12 million for the fight.

"Mayweather made Ricky too fired up, too aggressive. But Hopkins was over there, too, and when he tried to wind me up I was just laughing and giving him some back. I've got the temperament to take everything in my stride," Calzaghe said.
