In a rare showing of humility and sportsmanship Ricardo Mayorga took the first opportunity during the post “BRAWL” press conference to approach his opponent Fernando Vargas and raise his hand in unity and declare “warrior, courageous!” Mayorga then proceeded to get on his knees in front of Vargas and apologize for the pre fight antics and outrageous verbal outbursts that have come to be the norm in the promotion of his fights.
As Vargas took his turn at the podium he proceeded to alternate between Spanish and English as he addressed the collected southern California media as well as many fans that were able to make their way to the ringside area where the forum was held.
“First off, I would like to thank God, for always taking care of me and blessing me, I have no problems after the fight and He always took care of me.”
“I felt good; I feel I won the fight. The first knockdown was a slip, I was off balance. But I don’t want to take anything away from Ricardo Mayorga. I’m glad I don’t only have boxing, I have other things. I hope you are happy with my career. I am thankful for all that you have done for me. I have a phase two and three.”
Vargas made it clear that Vargas Entertainment Promotions was in his future and he was looking forward to begin his career as a promoter.
Vargas also took the opportunity to send a special greeting to “my idol Julio Cesar Chavez. Many decisions that I made in my career, from the trunks that I wore to the way I fought, I would often ask myself if Chavez would do the same.”
“From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank my fans, thank you guys. You loved me with all your heart. I love you from the bottom of my heart.” Vargas said in closing.
A visibly excited Mayorga was brief in his statements, but again he took the opportunity to make good for all the insulting comments he made in his share of the promotion.
“Thank you to God and all those present. To Vargas, I would like to publicly apologize for disrespecting his family, his mother and his sacred wife. I would personally like to apologize to his sacred wife and to his mother.”
Mayorga’s show of humbleness was met by applause by the gathered audience.
Mayorga also acknowledged the forecoming season as he stated “we will win the next fight but now we will celebrate Christmas and enjoy the holidays.”
In closing, Mayorga gave a hint to his upcoming plans for the New Year “in February I am planning on working to get to the 147 pound limit and go after Cotto and Mayweather and show the entire world that I am the champion of the 147 pound division. This weight was too heavy and this guy (pointing to Vargas) hit me too hard.”
