In a WBA super welterweight eliminator, Daniel Santos (30-3-1, 21 KOs) scored a brutal eighth round beatdown against Jose Rivera (38-5-1, 24 KOs). Rivera beat the count after being knocked down, but his corner threw in the towel. Time was 2:50.
Heavyweight Andrew Golota (40-6-1, 33 KOs) got back into the title picture with a sixth round TKO of Kevin McBride (34-6-1, 29 KOs). McBride had Golota seriously hurt in round one, but Golota weathered the storm. In round six, Golota tried the southpaw stance fo the first time, and his first punch (a straight left) rocked McBride. Golota then followed up with a volley of punches and got the stoppage at 2:42 of the round. "I proved tonight that I can still fight with anyone," said Golota after the fight. McBride commented, "I didn’t think the referee should have stopped it but I was having trouble seeing out of my eye. He really didn’t hurt me until the end....I thought that I had him out in the first round. It was close. I’m okay now."
WBA #15 heavyweight Kali "Checkmate" Meehan (33-3, 27 KOs) broke open a competitive fight with a sixth round TKO of WBA #4 DaVarryl "Touch Of Sleep" Williamson (24-5, 20 KOs). Meehan floored Williamson with a crushing right at the end of the sixth. Williamson beat the count, but was ruled unfit to continue by Chief Medical Officer Dr. Barry Jordan of the New York State Athletic Commission. "I was never going to lost this fight," said Meehan. "I felt better tonight than I did the night I almost stopped Lamon Brewster [for the WBO heavyweight championship]."
