The final press conference for Saturday night's Samuel Peter vs. Jameel McCline bout, now billed as, "Faith, Hope and Glory: ... Ain't No Stoppin' US Now," was held today at Madison Square Garden.
The main event features Samuel Peter, "The Nigerian Nightmare," who currently boasts a (28-1, 22 KO) record. Peter was granted the, 'interim," title when Oleg Maskaev was injured. If WBC President Jose Sulaiman can get into New York before Thursday's weigh-in, Peter will be presented the belt. If Sulaiman does not make it, it's expected a special ceremony will be held Friday.
Instead of Maskaev, Peter faces the always dangerous Jameel McCline, the Harlem, N.Y. born fighter, who currently resides in West Palm Beach, FL., and currently sports a (38-7-3, 23 KO) record.
Peter told the crowd in attendance, "Everybody will see a great fight, my gloves will do the talking on Saturday night." He added, "I am home and this belt belongs to me, I am taking over the division."
McCline stated, "I feel like a kid in a candy store. This is like a dream come true. I'm a beast, it's not easy to beat me." McCline then continued, "This fight was not supposed to happen for me because of my knee injury, but God brought this to me."
McCline then added, "I think that Maskaev and Peter had this entire thing planned as far as pulling out of this fight. They did not expect me to go to go to Don King's office and push for this fight."
Joel Fisher of Madison Square Garden stated, "We are now looking forward to Saturday night, with this brand new ring and Sam Peter and Jameel McCline will start what will be a long history of this ring, along with all the other fighter's on the card."
The non-televised undercard includes another heavyweight match-up between Poland's Andrew Golota (39-6-1, 32 KO's) against Mike Tyson conqueror Kevin McBride (34-5-1, 21 KO's) of Ireland. They will be fighting for the IBF North American Heavyweight Title.
McBride, who now has James "Buddy" McGirt in his corner, stated, "This is the Mecca of boxing, its a new ring and a new Cinderella story." McBride then sated he had three dreams he'd like to accomplish in the sport, the first was appearing in the Olympics, which he did in 1992, the second was to fight Mike Tyson, "And I beat him, " McBride boasted, and his third dream, he continued, was to become, "The first Irish-born heavyweight champion.
McBride then predicted, "I'll retire Andrew Golota on Saturday night."
Behind dark sunglasses, Golota fired back, "I'm going to kick his ass, see you on Saturday night Kevin."
The salvaged card is now being promoted by Don King, in association with Madison Square Garden and Duva Boxing.
Another bout that won't be televised on the Showtime telecast will be the WBA Super Welterweight elimination bout between Daniel Santos (30-3-1, 21 KO's) against Jose Antonio Rivera (38-5-1, 24 KO's.)
Rivera said of his bout with Santos, "This is the fight that will determine where I'm going in my career. This could turn out to be the fight of the year."
Santos countered, "I came here to fight. I feel like I'm in great shape for this match." Santos added, "This will be a great fight between me and Jose."
