After the fighters on Saturday night’s card finished their comments, the attention turned to two of Saturday’s ringside commentators, “Tito” Trinidad and Roy Jones, Jr., who didn’t disappoint. Watching those two eat up the spotlight clearly demonstrates the difference between talented athletes and bona fide stars.
Roy stepped up to the dais first.
“Chad’s a great champion but he’s got his work cut out for him with Mendoza,” observed Jones. “Come January 19th though, Roy Jones Jr. is back, and after that…” Jones paused dramatically, then glanced over to Dawson before turning to Mendoza, signaling that he’d fight the winner, to the cheers of those in attendance.
Not to be outdone though was Trinidad.
“Roy Jones Jr., has been one of the greatest champions ever in boxing,” explained Trinidad. “But on January 19th he’ll be facing another one of boxing’s greatest champions, Tito Trinidad.”
Trinidad continued, “January 19th is going to be a very special date for me. Its going to be the day I came back from retirement for the second time in my career and that night Tito Trinidad is going to be in excellent condition and prepared for whatever Roy Jones Jr. brings to the table.
Trinidad then spoke of how he’s beaten three Olympic gold medalists and, alluding to Jones’s gold medal he was deprived of at the Seoul Olympics, he spoke of defeating a fourth Olympic gold medalist. Thinking that Trinidad was boasting in Spanish that he would knock him out in four rounds, Jones responded from his seat, “I was planning on going six rounds, but if you want, we can do it in four,” as the crowd cheered its approval. Trinidad picked up on Jones’s claim a few moments later and then, looking at Jones, told everyone that he would knock Jones out in two rounds! Jones finally backed off, quipping, “You’re just trying to trap me now, let’s stick with four rounds.” It was a good-natured exchange that got a rise out of the crowd and entertained both the press and the other fighters in attendance. The two ring legends are scheduled to face off again at Friday’s weigh in, where they’ll participate in a free autograph session open to the public beginning at 3 p.m.
