Gontsa - Dzuman batters to draw

14 Sep 2007 13:43       hits 3560 Print version

In a competitive co-featured bout of the evening Ivan Gontsa (16-1-2, 4 KOs), the best Moldavian fighter on scene, barely retained his EBU-EE light middleweight title through an extremely hard affair versus tough local brawler Roman Dzuman (23-4-1, 10 KOs). Gontsa made it look an easy job in the early rounds, scoring with the jab and landing straight rights in support. Dzuman gained some success in round four, finally triggering off some rights to his opponent's face with a sudden left hook at the end. That had been, however, not enough for a Moldavian until the eighth round, when Dzuman, on a brink of defeat, landed a flash right to the beard, putting Gontsa to the floor.

Both fighters went in for kill in the closing rounds, sharing some good moments between. The bout ended excitingly with each of the combatants trying to knock his opponent out. An intense action was ruled a draw by the judges: 116-114, 113-114, 114-114. Both participants lit up the crowd but found themselves in a no-win situation, as the victor of the match was expected to face world-rated Russian banger Zaurbek Baysangurov for the EBU title on November 17. With the draw, a future opponent for Baysangurov still remains to be seen.

Baysangurov stops Dzuman!

Ukrainian-based Russian Baysangurov, WBC #8, IBF #8 and WBA #11, looked a little bit rusty in opening rounds trying to throw jabs rather than power punches. Oppositely, Dzuman did his best to affect champion with his most telling blows. In round two, challenger rocked Zaurbek with the strong uppercut only to be clocked by the same punch moments later. Baysangurov’s punches clearly became stiffer and more frequent down the stretch read more ...
