In an important crossroads bout between two unbeaten fighters, Ukrainian light heavyweight Vyacheslav Uzelkov (17-0, 10 KOs) impressively stopped Spanish national champion Gabriel Campillo (12-1, 5 KOs) in round five to capture the WBA intercontinental 175lb title at the Sports Place, Kiev, Ukraine.
The older but less experienced Spaniard pressed the action early in the fight, scoring often with lightning-speed but rather weak combinations. Uzelkov, on the other side, was unable to break his heavy fists through Campillo's guard. Instead the Ukrainian chose to bomb his way to the liver and was successful on some occasions. That was, however, not enough to turn the bout in his favor. The end came suddenly in round five, when Campillo, looking a bit overconfident and seemingly feeling an upset victory in front of him, was caught with a left-right combinaton of Uzelkov and crashed to the canvas. The Spaniard failed to beat the count as well as to retain his unbeaten record. His opponent is a bit luckier, heading probably to the top-fifteen of the WBA rankings.
