Former heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (35-2, 34KOs) was ordered by his doctor to stay away from training for at least six weeks.
This past Saturday, Klitschko was forced to undergo emergency surgery in an Austrian medical clinic to relieve pressure on a nerve in his back. As a result, he pulled out from his Sept. 22 bout with Jameel McCline, scheduled to take place in Germany and televised by Showtime.
Klitschko, 36, has not fought since December 2004, when he stopped Danny Williams in eighth rounds. Plagued by injuries, he retired in 2005. After months of speculation, he officially announced his return to the ring in January.
"Instead of training, I ended up in a hospital," Klitschko told RTL television in Germany. "I feel good now and I have no pain. I have the feeling I could start training again in a day or two but the doctor told me not to overdo it.
