Yesterday evening in his hometown of Ravenna, Italy, local hero Alberto Servidei (25-0-1, 7 KOs) unanimously outpointed Yuri Voronin (24-7-2, 17 KOs) of Ukraine over twelve hard-fought rounds to capture the vacant Euro title at 126lbs. Voronin had the edge in power and forced the action from the opening round but his pressure and rough style worked only in spurts against his taller, fellow southpaw opponent. Servidei showed great focus and delivered an array of sharp counterpunches whenever the opportunity arose, gaining momentum in the mid-rounds even though an accidental headbutt opened a gash on his right eyebrowe in the sixth stanza. With the Italian's staminaseemingly fading, Voronin won clearly the ninth, tenth and eleventh rounds but Servidei was the more accurate in the last one, thus making the verdict as close as it gets. All three judges had Servidei as the winner with scores of 116-113, 116-113 and 115-113. Fightnews had it 115-114 for Voronin with one round even.
