In a total war, Miguel Cotto (28-0, 23 KOs) won the WBA welterweight title with a spectacular five round demolition of previously unbeaten Carlos Quintana (23-1, 18 KOs). Quintana came to fight and gave as good as he got early, but Cotto's power turned the tide. Cotto dropped Quintana with a huge left hook to the liver in round five and Quintana barely beat the count. Cotto dropped him again with a barrage and Quintana almost didn't make it back to his corner and was in no condition to come out for round six. An explosive exhibition by the former WBO 140 world champion.
WBO welterweight champion Antonio Margarito (33-4, 24 KOs) successfully defended his title against Joshua Clottey (30-1, 20 KOs) via twelve round unanimous decision. The so-called most avoided welterweight in boxing looked vulernable early as Clottey continuously beat him to the punch, however, after Clottey probably broke his left hand in round four, Margarito was able to gain steam and seize the initiative, although Clottey remained game to the final bell. Scores were 118-109, 116-112, 116-112.
