"Thanks to those who were with me and thanks to those who were against me. It motivated me to work hard," newly crowned WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (28-0, 23 KOs) stated at the post fight press conference following his demolition of previously unbeaten Carlos Quintana.
Cotto stated he was very happy with the win. "As always, I go in to fight my fight and win round by round," he said. "In a fight at this level, you expect both fighters to have their moments. He had his and I had mine, but mine were greater. My shots were bigger and he didn't stand up to it."
As for the future, the WBA champion commented, "It's not my job to chose my opponents or who I will fight next. You saw Antonio Margarito. Margarito is a strong fighter, a great fighter, but I'm going to beat him if we fight....There are a lot of great champions at 147 lbs., but whoever my promotional team chooses to put in front of me I will beat."
When asked who the best welterweight is, Cotto responded, "Miguel Cotto."
Trainer Evangelista Cotto echoed his nephew's opinion, "He will destroy anyone at 147."
Cotto's next fight is expected to be against mandatory challenger Oktay Urkal (who stepped aside to allow Cotto-Quintana to happen), while Margarito has a mandatory pending against unbeaten Paul "The Punisher" Williams.
Quintana was not present at the presser. His promoter Walt Lambert stated that Quintana's vision was impaired and he wasn't seeing what he was getting hit with.
