Hidden behind a freeway and flashy new high rise condos, Vegas boxing staple Top Rank gym played host Wednesday to fighters from this weekend's Pacquiao vs. Morales III card. However the Mexican half of the main event only rendered the services of a chair during what was supposed to be an open media workout. Unlike his counterpart who dazzled onlookers with his chiseled physique just one day earlier, Erik "El Terrible" Morales decided to keep his goods hidden behind the curtains; prompting those present to favor the doubts of his ability to make the super featherweight limit at Friday's official weigh in.
"Not so quick," said Jose Morales, trainer and father of Tijuana's Erik Morales
"Erik will have no problem making weight, he's had no problems during training and it has not affected him in preparation for this fight."
With the recent plethora of fighters unable to make their weight limit additional attention has been brought to this trilogy "Finale," mainly to Morales. (Unbeknownst to those present, Bobby Pacquiao would fail to make weight for his bout just hours later)
"I'm going to make the 130 pound limit Friday without a problem, right now I'm a couple million dollars over but I'm right on," said a confident Morales – who looked very much as he did previous to the first two encounters, slender but not emaciated- is contractually obligated to pay Pacquiao $500,000 for every pound he comes in over the limit.
"Listen- my training has been to beat Pacquiao not to beat my weight like many people believe," said the former world champion.
"I beat him once at 130lbs remember? In the second fight sure he hurt me but it wasn't so much because he hurt me so bad but more because my body was worn down. That problem is solved. Pacquiao needs to know that I am certain that what happened during the second fight will not happen this time, I will not run out of gas."
Morales defended his recent losses and pointed out the fact that when Barrera lost to Pacquiao he never even had a chance during the fight, quite the opposite of Morales who definitely had his moments, even during his losing effort.
"I just hope that all you media that wrote me off and said that I was done, use that same pen to give me credit after my victory." Whether Morales opted not to do the open media workout because he is weak and frail or because he is playing possum is yet to be seen; however he has not failed to make weight in either of his battles with Pacquiao so credit must be given to one of the toughest and most entertaining Mexican fighters in history.
"If I ever put on a fight like either of the last two big Vegas fights, Barrera and Mayweather and my fans boo me, then that is a sign to me to walk away. You can't tell me that you are not entertained after seeing one of my fights," added Morales who said he is confident he is the one who gained more from the first two encounters and that he has improved even since his first victory.
"Did you see anything different from Pacquiao in the second fight? He isn't any faster, stronger, smarter he is has not changed anything," said Morales who is surprisingly coming into the fight a +240 underdog, despite winning the first battle and dominating the early portion of the second bout.
"I know his weaknesses I know his strengths. He has no defense he has no technique, he hasn't changed. Even when I was tired during the later rounds in the second fight I was able to land my punches. He is the same fighter he has always been."
While both are still very aware of the others capabilities, Morales left no doubt that he believes he is the better fighter and that he will again be victorious on Saturday night when he takes on Pacquiao for the third –and according to him- final time.
"I won't fight Pacquiao again. Hopefully after the fight everybody will go back to reality, him to his good training, good preparation but still no defense, no technique."
