Holyfield: It's my Season!

8 Sep 2006 15:26       hits 5065 Print version

In 42 days Evander Holyfield will turn 44 years old. In 64 days Evander Holyfield will fight in his 50th professional boxing match. While those numbers are high and indicate Holyfield should be completing (or should have already completed) his illustrious career, the former undisputed Cruiserweight and Heavyweight champion believes he has just opened a new door on his path to once again regaining the undisputed Heavyweight championship.

"I am ready and I truly believe it's my season," Holyfield, 39-8-2, 26 KO's said to a packed house at Gallagher's Steakhouse in NYC on Thursday to announce his November 10th date against Fres Oquendo in a bout which will take place at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. FSN will televise in a special pay-per-view format.

"The most important thing to me in life is for me to give my all," Holyfield explained. "We all have our time and on November 10th, we'll see who's time it is. But I do say it's my season; it's not time with me - it's my season. And I look forward to being undisputed heavyweight champion of the world one more time."

"I truly believe in life that we all have our time," Holyfield continued. "I've had 22 years as a professional and I've had a lot of seasons. I've been the undisputed Cruiserweight champion and I've been the undisputed Heavyweight champion of the world. I've won the titles four different times and people have written me off from the time I was a kid. I truly believe in the word of God and the word of God is going to allow me to sustain myself and to go through all the things I've been going thru in the 22 years of this boxing career."

"It's never been easy, I never thought it would be easy. Because I had a mother that told me that 'if it was easy, everyone would be champion.'"

"You know, Holyfield's a great warrior - you can never count him out," stated Oquendo, 26-3, 16 KO's. "I'm training as if this if my heavyweight championship of the world. This is a dream. I'm the uncrowned champ; I'm the young lion. You know, I've been through a lot in life. Born in the projects in Puerto Rico, raised in the projects in Chicago. It wasn't easy for me. It was a family effort."

"I'm one of the most feared heavyweights in the top ten," Oquendo continued. "I feel very honored to be standing here in front of a great, great fighter. And I guarantee you all on November 10th it will be a very historic event. This is the biggest name in the history of the sport and I'm glad to be a part of that. And on November 10th you will see the best, Fast Fres Oquendo that you have not seen yet."

And while Oquendo predicted victory, the story here is that of Holyfield. The former champion is 1-3 in his last four fights but due to injuries that were allegedly hampering his career, he now feels that the time is right to once again rise to the top of the division.

"Evander Holyfield never said he was old - he was hurt," explained promoter Murad Muhammad (Muhammad will promote the card along with Holyfield's Real Deal Events company). "This is our hope," continued Muhammad. "Not a black hope, not a white hope. America don't have a title - this is America's hope. So Holyfield decided to climb the mountain again."

"My goal is to become the undisputed champion of the world and until I do, you'll all be watching," Holyfield said. "Anything I say, I don't say it just to say it to amuse myself. I truly believe it."

"It's not how you start; no one chooses how they start. But I can choose how I end it. And I choose to retired as the undisputed heavyweight champion."
