Roy Jones Jr. may no longer have what it takes to defeat Antonio Tarver, but the future Hall of Famer had enough to teach Prince Badi Ajamu a lesson.
Coming off three straight losses, including two to former undisputed light heavyweight champion Tarver, Jones scored a unanimous 12-round victory over Ajamu on Saturday.
Fighting for the first time since October 1, the 37-year-old Jones finished ahead on each scorecard by indentical marks of 119-106, capturing the lightly regarded NABO light heavyweight crown.
"People are always going to doubt you," Jones said. "But when you believe in God, anything is possible."
In a bout billed as "Hold Nothing Back," Ajamu didn't for the early part of the opening round, landing a number of impressive blows with Jones against the ropes.
But Jones (50-4) quickly turned things around, rallying in the latter half of the round before delivering a dominating body attack over the next nine minutes of action.
"That's my fight style," Jones said. "I just do what I do."
Obviously frustrated, Ajamu (25-3-1) lost two points in the seventh round and another in the eighth for low blows. Jones opened a cut over the champion's right eye later in the fight, sealing to victory.
A cousin of the late Floyd Patterson, the 34-year-old Ajamu suffered his first loss in seven fights.
