After the 5,000+ in attendance exited the spacious Theatre of the Performing Arts inside the Aladdin Resort and Casino (soon to be called Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino), Bob Arum and his cast of merry men took center stage to speak about the spectacular card that just took place. Arum spoke about how he wants to come back to the Aladdin for more fight cards just like this, but his main goal was to start the promotional machine that should be Antonio Margarito versus Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
"I have reserved July 29 at the Thomas and Mack Center for Margarito to fight the winner of Mayweather and (Zab) Judah," Arum stated. "Hopefully Floyd will pull out the win because I know a fight between Mayweather and Margarito will be huge. It's a fight that everybody will want to see, especially if Mayweather can beat Judah."
"We'll see what happens but I think Floyd will win; at least I hope he does," Margarito added. "It will be a good fight but I know whoever I fight, whether it be Judah or Mayweather, you will see the truth as to who the best is."
"I am very happy about my victory tonight," Margarito said. "I have been telling everyone for a very long time that I am the best and I think tonight I proved it. Manuel Gomez is a great fighter; very tough. I know he is sad about how the fight ended because he felt he could have continued. But I think that after he settles down and re-watches the fight, he may be thinking differently. I know he is proud to be Mexican and he would have preferred to lose like a Mexican, and that is fighting. I hope he can get another chance to prove his skill."
"The referee never gave me a chance to even fight," a dejected Gomez said. "He counted to six and then stopped the fight. He didn't even reach ten and I know I would have continued. People who know me and have seen me fight know that I have been hit worse punches before and they know I always come back. I am not saying that I would have won the fight because it was a real good shot and Margarito is a great, great fighter, but at least give me a chance." Gomez also joked that he wishes that Richard Steele would retire, go home and watch his grand kids, but stated that he was only kidding around.
The onstage antics continued when Margarito called out Mayweather again, saying that he knows he'll beat Floyd when they fight.
At this point, Floyd's trainer/uncle Roger Mayweather took the dais to address the issue at hand. "Look, the fight only makes sense if it makes money," Mayweather stated. "Okay, this guy just scored a knockout over who? What's his name? I don't even know who he just fought. He's a guy that I would have done the same thing to and I haven't fought in over five years! You are all impressed by this? This guy (Margarito) has only fought guys with losing records or who have fought nobody. Who has this guy beaten? If the fight happens (Floyd/Margarito), it will only be if it makes sense. If the fight don't make money, it don't make sense. What you saw tonight is what would happen if Floyd fought him. I ain't gonna lie; Floyd is the greatest and you will see truth if they fight. This guy (Margarito) ain't standing a chance. You'll see."
Margarito then grabbed the microphone and said that whenever he does fight Mayweather, he'll do to him what the great Julio Cesar Chavez did to Roger Mayweather, which elicited a chorus of laughter from the crowd.
"Look, I ain't taking nothing from no one," Mayweather said. "I'll be honest; the best Mexican fighter in the world was Julio Cesar Chavez. I lost to him but he was the best. The best Hispanic fighter in the world was Roberto Duran. I can say that I fought most of the best of my time. This guy (Margarito) wouldn't last in my day. This guy ain't no Chavez and he ain't no Duran. Little Floyd will show you all that."
Hopefully the showdown between Margarito and Mayweather actually does happen in July. Many insiders feel that Floyd has been ducking Antonio and that "Pretty Boy" is scared. But Roger Mayweather insists that, "Floyd ain't ducking no one."
