Carlos Baldomir, left, of Argentina lands a punch against Zab Judah, of the Brooklyn Borough of New York
The stage was set when Judah punched Baldomir on the thigh instead of touching gloves during the prefight introductions. Judah's great speed gave him the advantage early, but the pesky Baldomir kept coming and coming. Referee Arthur Mercante Jr. admonished Baldomir for punching after the bell in round one, and Judah for holding and hitting in round two. Judah seemed to be cruising to a decision win until Baldomir suddenly staggered Judah in the seventh and Zab had to holding on. Baldomir continued to stalk the champion in the eighth. Baldomir continued to outwork Judah in round nine as the fight tightened up. Baldomir continued to be the aggressor in the tenth and eleventh. Baldomir seemed to hurt Judah at the end of the twelfth but simply raised his arms instead of throwing punches.
Scores were 115-113, 114-113, 115-112, all for Baldomir who paid sanctioning fees only for the WBC. The WBA and IBF titles are now vacant. Judah's planned April 8 superfight with superstar Floyd Mayweather went up in smoke with the loss.
